Roofs today can luckily be made in many different materials. These include wood, composite roofing, metal panels, asphalt shingles, flat, foam, tiles, clay, etc. Every material has its advantages and disadvantages so be sure to keep an eye on the critical facts. We find that most of our clients are not really aware of how materials react to different weather conditions and what are the most often damages depending on a material. That is why we decided to create this small guide on the costs and the most often damages related to the type of material.

Metal Roofs – $300 on average

Most often damages concern the improper repair or modification and incorrect installation to begin with. Fasteners for the panels or shingles that are not gently and properly removed can leave small holes and potential leaks points. Be sure to seal those after removing. Fasteners are also prone to age so inspect them often because they can be ruined due to contractions and expansions.

Asphalt Shingles – $260 on average

Asphalt shingles are known for not being the premium material. If you live in a windy area, these are the worst choice. Strong winds and hurricanes can lift up or blow off the entire roofing system.  That is why it is vital that your asphalt shingles are properly installed. These shingle shave a nailing strip where the nails are pushed through. This is also a critical place. Make sure that your contractor provides you with a warranty for asphalt shingle roofing system. There is a possibility you will need it.

Composite Roofing – $300 on average

Composite roofing is special in many ways. First of all, it is extremely lightweight. When it comes to working with it, it is amazing and easy to work with. That is how you save money because you will not have to build the supporting structure. However, that is also why it is prone to damage from high winds. While asphalt roof may lose some shingles, composite roofs can be left without an entire section so make sure you secure it. If you own a composite roofing system, search for stone granules. This is a clear sign your shingles have to be replaced as soon as possible.

Wood Shake – $350 on average

Wood shakes and shingles give your property that obsolete but elegant appearance. They look rustic and beautiful. People usually feel welcomed and warm, but these shingles can have a lot of disadvantages. Moss buildup is one of them is they are exposed to a constant shade. It may seem unimportant, but over time this can deteriorate the wood and create room for the leak to appear. It is highly attractive to insects of all kind. Make sure you use the proper protection. Don’t forget how the UV rays can make your shingles brittle and ugly.

Slate Roofs – $540 on average

Slate is premium material. It is a natural stone and it provides great protection to your family and belongings. However, slate also has some minor disadvantages. They mostly occur if the roof is not installed properly and that is not a rare case. Slate tiles are held together by nails and if they are pushed too tightly, the edges can stick up and cause a leak. Slate is also prone to ice damming.

Great Service

I choose Bill Hubbell over 3 other roofers home depot because he made the roof happen at a critical weather situation labor day weekend that could have resulted in much home owner ins. damage
