How to repair a rubber roof

Flat roofing systems are increasing in popularity when it comes to residential roofing systems. They are most often made out of EPDM, commonly known as a rubber roof. They are a fairly short-term installation with a lifespan of about 15 to 20 years. Generally, they are significantly easier and safer to install, since they don’t require the use of an open flame torch or similar tools.

To make the most out of your investment, you have to ensure the use of premium materials and innovative techniques. Not only that, you have to properly prepare the area you will be working on. By using unproven methods and low-cost materials, you are creating unnecessary hazards, which could all be easily avoided. Sometimes, making a bigger investment in the beginning can save you much more money in the future. Don’t be cheap when it comes to your living space.

EPDM roofing systems aren’t compatible with any type of asphalt, including cement flashing or aluminum roof coatings. In case you decide to see for yourself, prepare a roofing contractors’ number. It’s a well-known fact that if you decide to use asphalt on your rubber roofing system, you will have to replace that part as it will contaminate the membrane. In the worst case scenario, which is surprisingly common, you will have to replace your entire roofing system.

The preparation of the area is a very important segment of work. A typical membrane has a film covering it, which will need to be clean for the sake of repair. Experts advise the use of cleaning products that don’t leave any residue after applying and drying and the use of cloth rags. The roof has to be clean in order for the new patch to stick to the film of the membrane.

The next step is to measure the roof, twice or thrice if necessary. Then lay the patch material over the designated area and make sure it extends over the edge for at least 2 inches. Cut the material you’ve decided to use and trim it around the edges. Apply a primer using your typical paint roller. Make sure it also extends over the edges.

When choosing the type of membrane, you get to choose between two choices. The first one is called a pressure-sensitive roof repair patch, which is pre-painted with adhesive. Its application is simple: remove the film from the patch and stick it to the membrane. To make sure everything is equally covered, use a steel roller.

The other type is the non-pressure-sensitive roof repair patch. Unlike the former one, it doesn’t include the adhesive. When choosing the correct one, make sure it’s meant for sealing rubber roofing systems. After applying the glue, use a steel roller and roll the entire patch to make sure it’s evenly distributed across your entire roof. In the end, use a lap sealant along the edges of the patch to make it waterproof.
