A leaky flat roof

Considering the rise in popularity of flat roofing systems among many homeowners in the US, many techniques and products have been developed that deal with the most common problem on every roof available – leaking. Since flat roofing systems have no slope, which doesn’t allow for the full impact of gravity to take course, specific measures have to be taken in order to properly deal with the problem and in the end, avoid any unnecessary cost.

An interesting thing about flat roofs is that even though they’re called flat roofs, they aren’t actually a 100% flat. To continue to be called a completely functional roof, a certain degree of the slope has to present. With flat roofing systems, it has to be a 1 at least:80 ratio to allow for water drainage. Also, according to the newest regulations in the roofing industry, flat roofs have to reach the approved standard in insulation. Since flat roofs aren’t generally known for their insulating properties, a rigid foam insulation was invented. It’s perfect for use on weatherproof flat roofs.

There are some tell-tale signs by which you can tell a leaking has occurred. The most easily recognized signs, besides the actual dripping, are dark stains or spots on your ceiling. If possible, refrain from walking on your roof. Since you’re probably not an expert, without proper advice and guidance, you might severely damage your roof, even though it’s unwillingly.

To avoid or minimize any possible damage, use a long board and place it across your roof. That is done to spread your weight evenly. Don’t place the board near the edges.

It’s generally easier to locate the source of the leak on a sloped roof than on a flat roof. Due to many factors, water can run in all kinds of directions before actually dripping down.

Thanks to the many advances in the roofing industry, many techniques were created to counter that problem. You should start by measuring the wall distance from the entrance to the problematic area on the outside of your house. Afterward, look upwards of the area you’ve measured and look for any visible signs of damage. To get the best estimate, remove as much of the accumulated debris as you possibly can. Check for literally anything that seems out of place: missing nails, small cracks, chippings, etc.

Before starting on the repair, you should make sure your roof is as clean as possible. In addition, make sure to take adequate precautionary measures. Although you might be quite talented in the DIY sector, it’s advised to contact a validated roofing contractor to deal with any repairs. Flat roofing systems require a special set of skills that not every contractor can provide, so make sure to choose the one you’re comfortable with. Take all the actions you deem necessary and make sure the job is done as it should be. Get involved in the process, and ask questions if the need arises. Don’t consider yourself inferior, you are the employer, and in the end, you’re in charge of this project.

Great Service

I choose Bill Hubbell over 3 other roofers home depot because he made the roof happen at a critical weather situation labor day weekend that could have resulted in much home owner ins. damage
