If you notice water stains covering the walls or the ceilings or if you smell the moisture inside your home than there is a possibility that you are having a leak somewhere in the house. The hardest thing about roof leaks is not fixing them but finding them. Even though people don’t homeowners don’t usually think like this, small leaks are very easy to fix so why procrastinate with those? We put together this short article so we could explain to you where to look for leaks and what are the most prominent causes of leaking. We don’t think that you can fix everything so we won’t go into how to fix major problems, that is a thing that a professional has to deal with.

If you notice signs of leaking inspect your roof so you can determine where exactly is the water coming from. The best thing you can do is fix it right away because even though it may not look as bad, over time, a major problem will appear. Leaks can do big damage to your family and to your belongings. If water comes inside the house it can ruin the electricity, mold, algae, rotted sheathing may appear solely because you did not fix a small thing on time. So if you notice a small hole or a scratch, call a contractor or fix it yourself because it will evolve into a major problem very soon.

Roof inspection should always start from detecting with detecting a roof uphill from the strains. Penetrating objects are the most often causes of a roof leak. It is a rare case that a leak develops in open area.  Penetrations include roof vents, dormers, chimneys, flashing- pretty much anything that is pushed right through the roof surface. However, leaks do not necessarily need to be right at the place of penetration. It can even appear a meter away from the place where the roof is penetrated.

If you have an attic and if you have an access to the attic, inspect it. This is the easiest way to detect a roof leak. If you are experiencing a leak, then look for signs of mold or water stains. If you can’t go in your attic than it is time for you to get the ladder and go to the rooftop.

What we are going to tell you now might sound strange but it is the most convenient and the simplest way of detecting a leak. First of all, ask someone to be your assistant. Their role will be walking in the house and looking up. Next, take a hosepipe with yourself to the rooftop. Now start soaking the whole roof or the area you think a leak may appeared but you are not sure. Wet all the areas penetrating your roof like flashing, chimneys, and vents and so on. While you are doing that, your helper should be waiting and look for signs of water.  If water appears somewhere that means that your roof is damaged. That’s it, you have found the place of leaking.

Great Service

I choose Bill Hubbell over 3 other roofers home depot because he made the roof happen at a critical weather situation labor day weekend that could have resulted in much home owner ins. damage
