When to repair your roof

Truth is; roof leaks are really easy to appear. And no one in the entire world like them. It is not very fun to run around with a bucket and a mop right? Or having to follow weather forecast or having to worry about the next storm. Small problems could lead to major ones; so we recommend taking care of little things on time. Sometimes, you can even do it yourself even if you don’t really believe in your roofing skills. That is why we created this series of small guides on small repairs. How many times did we say small? Okay, so, we are going to explain some prominent causes of leaking and how you can easily fix those. Keep reading and save your money and time.

Even though there are numerous things to look out for, we decided to mention the three very common causes of leaks. These you can take care of yourself and we are going to describe how exactly.

Broken vent booting could be a problem

You know those small pipes that stick out of the top of your roof? Yes, those are you roof vents. They have a purpose of eliminating excess water and moisture from the inside of your house. Leak coming from here often leave many dark spots.

Roof vents are sealed together by using flashing. Flashing is put around the opening and the rubber boot is placed over the end where the pipe goes out of the roof. Aging can cause the flashing to break or the roof to simply decay. Either is bad.

Use a small knife to remove the rubber boot around the vent. Take a pry bar and break the seal on any connected shingles. Put a new rubber under the shingles and over the vent and bring it down to the roof. Make sure you don’t forget to secure the new boot with roofing nails or layers on either side and caulk under the shingles so they are sealed to the flashing

Clogged gutters lead to leaking

If you noticed leaves or any other excess sticking out of the gutter when you look up onto your roof then your gutters are probably clogged. If not, there may be water coming from a downspout during a storm.

Gutter are meant to prevent water from going to the inside of your house. They take it away from your roofing system. If they are clogged, rainwater will amass in one area and go through the small cracks into your home.

We don’t really have a unique strategy to fixing this one. Take the ladder, go up the roof and use your hands to pull out stuff clogging your gutter. Simple enough?

Cracked chimney

Look for signs of wear and tear on the mud cap or around the top of the chimney. Look for small holes in the places where the chimney is connected to the roof. Also, be careful on the flashing and shingles surrounding these areas.

Mortar is used on chimney and it is a mixture of water, sand and cement so it can easily erode in bad weather conditions.

Find a source of leak and replace the missing mortar. But be careful, sometimes, this problem is much bigger than you think and you should call a contractor in that case.
