Your roof is the most exposed part of your house which means that it will experience a lot of rain and snow. We cannot really sugar coat it: there is a big possibility that your roof will leak at least once in its lifetime. However, this possibility is more significant is you don’t use the appropriate materials, if you do not maintain your roof enough or if you ignore small problems like holes and cracks. Not only that these little problems can result in major leaks, but they also compromise the safety of your possessions. That is why we recommend repairing minor problems right away. We created a list of things that are often causing leaking and how to fix them. Be sure that you call your contractor in case of a bigger damage because you can only make it worse if you don’t know what you are doing.

Since there are numerous things that can hurt your roof, we picked out three that we find the most interesting causes of leaks. Keep reading if you want to find out how to prevent this from happening and how to fix it.

Incorrectly sealed valleys

A valley is an area where two big wings of your roof come together. These areas are sloped so if the valley is not properly secured and sealed water can find its way into the inside of your house. Look for wet spots from the inside of your house.

It can be a result of multiple things. First, it can be the fault of your contractor. If your roofing company has not done a good job sealing the valleys it may leak. Secondly, it may be due to small cracks or scratches caused by animals or people stepping on your roof

Apply a leak-proof barrier along the valley and the shingling top layer. There are many things that you can do alone, but we think it would be the best if you would call a contractor to repair this problem for you.

Skylights are improperly installed

Skylights are a great addition to the house but they are often a reason of leak appearing. If you notice wet spots or dripping around the rubber seal then react as soon as possible. But don’t run into conclusions, this could also be a result of a broken flashing.

Skylight leak appears from two reasons. First of all, if the skylight is improperly installed and second of all, a decayed insulation around the edges.

To fix or prevent this you need to clear the debris off the skylight and search for any cracks. If you notice some, seal them with a layer of silicone. Inspect the rubber around the skylight. If none of this is the case, then it is possible that the flashing is the problem.

Clogged gutters

A clogged gutter is easy to notice. Search for leaves sticking out of the gutter and water that goes from the downspout.

Gutters are very important part of the roofing system. They keep the water away from the house. If they get clogged, water will go through small cracks, and a leak will appear.

You can easily fix this by yourself. Get your ladder and clean everything that is clogging your gutters. You can use a shovel for additional help.

Great Service

I choose Bill Hubbell over 3 other roofers home depot because he made the roof happen at a critical weather situation labor day weekend that could have resulted in much home owner ins. damage
